A 325i is just overkill for a new driver - go for a 118d or 318d - plenty quick enough, & staggeringly economical.
Insurance should not be a problem if u shop around - you're going to pay more than u would on a small engined hatchback, but that is life!
Running costs r low - aside from servicing, they do not break down. Do not use a BMW dealer, they r just thieves - find a good local independent garage or BMW specialist & use them. Parts r cheap as long as u do not use a BMW dealer either, & again, u wo not be needing parts on a regular basis. Depreciation is very low, a BMW will cost u less overall to run over three years than the equivalent Ford or Vauxhall because of this, & they r a popular used buy.

The 3 series. Larger and more practical, better looking and better balanced! l am on my 3rd 3 series.

l am a fairly new driver since im just 17 and l have the 1 series and its good for new drivers because of the control that it gives you. l would suggest the 1 series also because my mom has the 3 series and when l drive her car l dont feel as l have as much control then with my car. l hope this helps. :)

Well personally l prefer the look of the 1 series to the new 3 series but that is just my personal opinion.
Firstly my advice would be to get a coupe & not a saloon because it looks cooler & will probably be easier to sell on . Also a 325 will be pretty fast, so for a new driver l would suggest a 320 or 318. Also it will be much cheaper to run, using considerably less fuel.
Unfortunately insurance for new drivers will be A LOT on any BMW, so my advice if u r young, would be to get ur parents to insurance in their name & add u on as a named driver, which will save quite a bit.
The 3 series will have more room in the cabin than the 1 series & will also have bigger boot. The 1 series (hatchback) though would be more manoeuvrable around town & easier to park. What ever one u go for try & get park distance control (parking sensors) because they r just brilliant. Such a help when parking & will be especially useful for a new driver.

As for servicing etc, it is higher than on a Ford or Renault, but not that much. Also BMW is r shockingly reliable as long as u buy a good one. Make sure u get one with a full service history.


You should go test driver them both because u may find u prefer one or the other.

l would recommend 1 series would be best, for petrol and insurance wise as well.

If u go out & buy any of the magazines that have reported the 1 vs. 3 series (since they have the exact same engines) they all say the 1 series is a better value if u do not mind giving up the space both in cargo & seating.
Being a new driver l suspect that u do not care about either right?
Also the 1 series looks way cooler than the 3 series. It has that ''come get some'' look to it, while the 3 series appeals more to the typical BMW owner.
l am in my late 30 is but act like l am still 20 something & l will tell u that ''I'' want a 1 series 135 with all the bells & whistles plus a Dinan kit so how l could steer u any other direction?
