l am coming to the end of a 3 year lease on a 2006 325i. l have low miles and want my mom to buy it out (she needs a new car) with me still on the title. l arranged with my dealer to have it certified used and then they will extend out the warranty as they should. My questions for those here are these:

1) Is paying for the certification normal? The dealer wants to charge us $1100 to run the certification and then pay for any repairs that may be needed. l assume because the buyout will not see their lot, they are adding on their profit in the form of exteding the warranty. But since the car is really still under warranty, why should l pay for repairs?

2) If l decide to not pay for something to be fixed (i.e. if the brake pads are good enough but not certified used good enough), will they then not certify the car and extend the warranty.

l understand that these are different circumstances from a normal certified used purchase, but it all started to sound very fishy and l grabbed my mom and walked out. l still have 3 weeks on the lease and could just give it back. Should l tell them l am not going to pay for that certification or I will give the car back without purchasing.

1. If u were just turning the car in the dealer could ding u on all kinds of end of lease issues with the car. You should get the car inspected before turning it in to avoid any nasty surprises. However, as u want to extend the warranty the dealer is attempting to hold u hostage & yes, if the car is under warranty they should be paying for repairs but if there is nothing wrong with the car now & nothing breaks in the next three weeks it is a moot point. You will get an inspection & they will ''find'' something to charge u over.

2. l understand BMW pays for everything maintenance wise the first few years the car is under warranty so they should be covering the brake pads if it is covered under regular maintenance & service. You might try taking it to a different dealership under the guise of routine scheduled maintenance.

l honestly would just give the car back & start fresh with a certified used car for ur mom & another one for you. Dealers r really hurting right now & there r bargains to be had. By trying to negotiate on this car u currently have u r giving the dealer unnecessary leverage.
