Turning 16 in August and I bought a 1987 BMW 635CSi (L6) for $2200. Is this a good choice for a first car?

It gets about 24 mpg.
Also, l was wondering if l should sell it for $4300 and buy a 1987 Porsche 944 turbo

keep the bmw
its alot mroe relible then the porsche
and im sure better with insurence

l would keep it. Repairs for the porsche will be much more expensive but your BMWs repairs will be expensive as well bc it is a low volume car and is German

sell it and sell it fast, also dont even think about the 951, they both are huge money pits, my recommend, toyota, honda, stick with tried and true reliability

l know the 87 944T. The difference between the two is night & day. The 944 was an awesome car when they were new. But time has not been kind to them. They need constant attention, they r much more expensive to keep going than the BMW. Just a hard to find bolt for the 944 can be 25.00.
The BMW is of the rare time where the car was built to last & they have & still are. 1987 was almost the last year bmw built a quality long lasting few repairs needed car. They can take a beating & keep on ticking. Since BMW has used the same parts in other models the parts r everywhere. The 6 is the same as a 5, the suspension, engine, trans, brakes, radiator, computers ect. the only parts that do not interchange is anything that makes it the different model, body parts most interior parts ect. Hands down u go with the 6 series. l loved the 944 & 928 is of the past but they just fell apart to much & r nothing but a hassle. The BMW can be restored in 1/4 the time & be even more dependable than a brand new car with little money..

a 635CSi is not the same as an L6. So which one is it?

l would say it is a moderately good choice of a first car, but it is a pretty rare and unique car, known as the ''sharknose'' or the ''big 6.'' Take good care of it, do not be a typical teenager and race around like a lunatic and forget to change the oil.

Its a great car, fast and very few still around in good shape . l have three an 84, 318 with over 350000, a 93, 325is with 189000, and a 2003 X-5 with 78000,. So the miles are no problem and the gas mileage you are getting sounds as if the engine is good. If the body is in great shape keep it, and give it some tender care you will fall in love with the brand . Good find ! Wish it were me.

l own a 83 635CS l (E24) and just love it. l am not sure though it is suitable for a 16 year old. First, it is very expensive to maintain -- parts (when you can find them) are very costly. The other problem (if this is a problem) is that l tend to get aggressive when l drive it because of its power to weight ratio -- expecially when l am around Mustangs or Camaros. l just love competing against same in autocrosses. Maybe this is why l never get 24mpg :)

The L6 is a derivative of the E24 635CSi & with the exception of more leather in the interior, shared the identical powertrain of the 635CSi.

l have owned my '85 E24 (Euro M635CSi) since it was new & out of all the BMWs l have had, 2002, 2002tii, 320i, E28, E39 M5, & currently an E60 M5, the E24 is my favorite.

l have to agree it will probably be more reliable than the 944 turbo, however, unless ur parents r going to help financially, the E24 will definitely not be cheap to maintain - hardly any German-made car is. But the driving feel, overall balance, & quality of most German cars will spoil u for anything else. These cars require vigilant maintenance or they will ''turn on you''. If you're not ready to handle this, youd be better off with something Japanese.

You cannot afford a $2000 converter, or a $5000 tranny.
The maintenance will kill you.Dump it and support the American economy. Not Japan or Germany.
