some have optional turbodiesel engines in europe (though not currently available in the US) that get close to 40 MPG

Seriously though, their whole efficient dynamics campaign is not something to ignore and the combination of performance and efficiency their coming up with is nothing short of amazing. l doubt they will be there by 2009 but by 2010 l am sure the diesel powered cars will. l can not wait to drive the 335d when it gets here. l hear that is going to get close to 36 mpg. I'd say that is pretty close to approaching 40 mpg.

Some diesel engines in Europe are getting close to 40..but a normal diesel economy car in Europe can get at lease 50-60 MPG...Hybrid models that might come out might get mid to high 30s.

Just the Mini made by BMW get sclose to 40 MPG average.. Other then that not going to happen anytime soon for any other BMW..
